Eric Troestler, a Parisian-born Londoner, stumbled upon an unexpected opportunity to participate in the Twing Raid, an annual rally for Renault Twingos. His friend's offer of an abandoned Twingo, left untouched for six years, presented a unique challenge and an exciting prospect. With his brother's mechanical expertise and his own enthusiasm, Eric embarked on a journey to transform this neglected car into a rally-ready machine.
The Twingo, a 1999 model, was in surprisingly good condition. Eric's brother, a skilled mechanic, focused on modifications rather than engine upgrades, recognizing the reliability of the 1149cc engine. The car's bodywork was intact, allowing for enhancements like front and rear bash plates, raised suspension, and larger wheels with all-season tires. These modifications not only improved the car's off-road capabilities but also added a touch of rally-inspired style.
One of the most intriguing aspects of this project was the interior transformation. Eric's brother removed the back seats, creating a spacious boot area. This innovative use of space was further optimized by installing two spare wheels side by side, along with essential survival equipment and fire extinguishers. A false boot floor concealed the tools and spare parts, ensuring they were readily accessible during the rally.
The Twing Raid, a 10-day adventure from Spain to Morocco, attracted around 450 participants. Eric's meticulously prepared Twingo, now a rally-raid special, was ready to conquer the challenging terrain.
