Reawakening his art career; local resident has exhibit at Heart of Salisbury
Mike Ploplis, a local resident, is experiencing a resurgence in his artistic pursuits, showcasing his work at the Heart of Salisbury. This exhibit, titled "Fauxtanicals," is a testament to his newfound dedication to art, a journey that began three years ago when he started creating art daily but wasn't yet focused on his art business. Ploplis has a collection of paintings inspired by botanical images, with plans to release limited prints or make the collection available online for purchase.
The exhibit was made possible by a chance encounter with Wivianny "Wivi" DeHaas, the owner of Heart of Salisbury. They met a few years ago when Ploplis was closing his studio at Railwalk Studios & Gallery. DeHaas offered to host an exhibit, and they worked together to install the pieces, resulting in a beautiful presentation that elevated Ploplis' art.
Ploplis' unique style, which includes using dish soap and spray paint, has been well-received. He explains that dish soap acts as a masking medium, creating a batik effect when colors are layered. This technique, combined with his use of enamel spray paints, adds texture and vibrancy to his work. Despite lacking formal art training, Ploplis has always had an artistic aptitude, a trait inherited from his family.
His wife, Erin, and children, Reilly and Raegan, are his biggest supporters. Reilly, a UNC-Charlotte graduate and sous chef in Charlotte, and Raegan, a rising eighth-grader at Gray Stone Day School and a watercolor artist, have inspired Ploplis with their own talents. The family, along with his in-laws, Michael and Kristine Turco, and Raegan's godparents, Ed and Sharon Campbell, attended the opening reception to show their support.
The exhibit, which includes original paintings, prints, giclees, and upcycled clothing art, will be on display until the end of July. Ploplis' work has been well-received, with attendees expressing interest in his unique art process and the use of dish soap and spray paint.
